Reading Lists in Canvas

Information supporting the use of the Reading List app in Canvas.

Linking citations in a Canvas page

To add a Reading List link for one citation (or multiples) to a page in your Canvas course shell:

  1. Open your Canvas course shell and select Modules from the navigation menu
  2. Select the Page where you want to add the Reading List link
  3. Select the Edit button (top right) and navigate to the section on the page where you want to add the link
  4. From the Tools menu, select Apps, then select Reading List citation
    Note: you may need to select the View All option to select Reading List citation.

  1. In the 'Editor' pop-up box, select the citation(s) then select Add
    Note: the Link label is set to 'View item' and the Bibliography style defaults to 'Expanded Reading List Style', but another style may be selected.

  1. Scroll to the bottom of the page and select Save

Linking citations or sections in Canvas modules

To add a Reading List link for a citation or a section to a module in your Canvas course shell:

  1. Open your Canvas course shell and select Modules from the navigation menu
  2. Select the Module where you want to add the Reading List link by selecting the + icon

  1. Select External tool from the drop-down menu and from the list of tools, select Reading List link selection

  1. In the 'Link resource' pop-up box, select a citation or section, then Select 
  2. Scroll down and edit Page name e.g. Week 6 readings
  3. Change the Indentation (optional) then select Add item

Shareable links

To add a Reading List shareable link for one citation or a section to a page in your Canvas course shell:

Note: this method might be used if linking text on the Canvas page, such as utilising an Emble button.

  1. In your Reading List, select the Share icon to create a shareable link to a section or item. The Share icon is visible when hovering over the section or individual item, appearing on the right-hand side

  1. From the 'Share' pop-up box, select Copy shareable link to item. The link will be copied to the clipboard
  2. Go to your Canvas course shell and navigate to the page where you want to add the shareable link
  3. Select the Edit button (top right)
  4. To link to text (this might be an Emble button), highlight the text and select the Links icon then select External Link
  5. In the 'Insert link' pop-up box, paste the shareable link in the Link field then select Done

  1. Scroll to the bottom of the screen, select Save. Testing your link is highly recommended!
