What is a standard?

According to Standards Australia a standard is:

Voluntary documents that set out specifications, procedures and guidelines that aim to ensure products, services, and systems are safe, consistent, and reliable
Documents that cover a variety of subjects, including consumer products and services, the environment, construction, energy and water utilities, and more

They are:

Practical documents which set realistic goals
Developed in accordance with industrial, scientific and consumer knowledge
Regularly reviewed to make sure they continue to be relevant and useful
