EndNote Online

A guide to using EndNote Online. EndNote Online is the online version of the EndNote Desktop software program.

Referencing styles

Before using EndNote Online with Word, first select a bibliographic style (or styles). To do this:

Go to EndNote Online, select Format, and Select Favourites. From the pop-up box, select your style and Copy to Favourites. This will enable the style to be an option in Microsoft Word.

There is a style specific to RMIT staff and students. If your school uses Harvard, please locate the Harvard_RMIT_EndNote version.

Other possible styles include APA 7th, Vancouver, and AGLC4.

Inserting references into your MS Word document

Insert In-text citations into Word

  1. In Microsoft Word, go to the EndNote tab.
  2. Click the Insert Citations button.
  3. Enter some search terms and click the Find button.
  4. Select the reference(s) you wish to use.
  5. Click the Insert button.

Note: If you are working on a large document, it is a good idea to turn instant formatting off in Word before you start inserting citation as this feature can be slow. To do this:

  2. Select the EndNote tab.
  3. Select Preferences.
  4. Untick the checkbox 'Enable Instant Formatting on new Word documents' and click the OK button.

  2. Select a group from the References drop-down menu.
  3. Select the Bibliographic style.
  4. Select a File format, for example RTF.
