Mendeley is a reference manager tool to help collect, organise, cite and share references.

Adding references: Mendeley Desktop

Adding references from LibrarySearch

LibrarySearch can download individual or multiple records. The process is similar, but the following instructions highlight downloading multiple records.

  1. Open LibrarySearch and ensure your Mendeley library is open
  2. For full access, log into your library account using your RMIT ID and password
  3. Undertake a search
  4. Mark the references you want to export from LibrarySearch by selecting the pin icon to the right of each reference

      5. To view your saved records, select the pin icon on the top right of the page to open My Favourites
      
6.  In Saved Records, select the tick box at the top of the list to mark all references, or select a tick box for individual references
      7. You’ll now see 3 options next to My Favourites. Select the ellipsis icon
      8. Select Mendeley Export

       9. The selected reference(s) will automatically be exported and appear in your Mendeley library.

A PDF copy will not automatically be uploaded to the citation in your Mendeley library. Add the PDF manually to the citation using the Files + button within the reference.

Note: Go to your Mendeley library and check each new imported reference to ensure the information is correct. 

Adding references from Google Scholar

Google Scholar can download individual or multiple records. 

  1. Open Google Scholar and ensure your Mendeley program is open
  2. For full access, log into your Google Scholar account
  3. Undertake a search
  4. Select the white star to mark the references you want to export. You will be asked to add to or create a label. This will then save the reference to My library and the white star changes colour to blue
  5. From My library, to export a single reference navigate to the reference you want to export and select the Cite option and choose RefMan
  6. To export all references from your Google Scholar library, select the Export all button at the top of the screen and choose RefMan

        7. In Mendeley select +Add references in the top left corner, then Import file(s). Select and import the correct .ris file.

A PDF copy will not automatically be uploaded to the citation in your Mendeley library. Add the PDF manually to the citation using the Files + button within the reference.

Note: Go to your Mendeley library and check each new imported reference to ensure the information is correct.  

Adding references from Scopus

Scopus can download individual or multiple records. 

  1. Open Scopus and ensure your Mendeley library is open
  2. Undertake a search
  3. Choose the reference(s) by selecting the box icon at each reference. You can also select All to choose from Select All or Select this page 
  4. Select Export and then Mendeley from the list of Reference managers
  5. The reference(s) will then be added to your Mendeley library.

A PDF copy will not automatically be uploaded to the citation in your Mendeley library. Add the PDF manually to the citation using the Files + button within the reference.

Note: Go to your Mendeley library and check each new imported reference to ensure the information is correct. 

Adding references from ProQuest

ProQuest can download individual or multiple records.

  1. Open ProQuest and ensure your Mendeley library is open
  2. Undertake a search
  3. Choose the reference(s) by selecting the box icon at each reference. To select a page of references, tick Select 1-20
  4. Select the 3-dot ellipsis in a circle and from Citation Export, select RIS Citavi, Mendeley, etc

       5. The Export/Save box will appear, select Continue

       6. From Mendeley select +Add references in the top left corner, then Import file(s). Select the correct .ris file into Mendeley.

A PDF copy will not automatically be uploaded to the citation in your Mendeley library. Add the PDF manually to the citation using the Files + button within the reference.

Note: Go to your Mendeley library and check each new imported reference to ensure the information is correct. 

Import PDFs

There are two ways to add references to your Mendeley library from a PDF. Mendeley will automatically extract the metadata from the PDFs and create corresponding entries in your library.

1) From a file or folder

From Mendeley select +Add references in the top left corner, then Import file(s).

2) Drag and drop method

Drag and drop the PDF(s) from your computer to the Mendeley library.

Note: Go to your Mendeley library and check each new imported reference to ensure the information is correct. 

Adding references manually

  1. From Mendeley Desktop, select +Add references in the top left corner, then Add reference manually

      2. Select Reference Type and enter details. Fill in as much information as possible to ensure the reference is complete

      3. When complete, Add entry.

Note: Go to your Mendeley library and check each new imported reference to ensure the information is correct. 

Adding references: Mendeley Web

Install Web Importer

Create or sign-in for a Mendeley Web account. Download the Mendeley Web Importer extension for your browser. The Web Importer allows you to import papers, web pages, and other documents directly into your Mendeley library from search engines and academic databases. It is available for Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge browsers.

  1. From any webpage select the Mendeley Web Importer icon located on your browser's toolbar
  2. A pop-up panel will appear with the webpage citation details 
  3. Select the Add button on the Web Importer pop-up panel to select and add the webpage(s) to your Mendeley library, or a Collection
  4. From the pop-up panel, select View Library to directly open your online Mendeley library.

Note: Go to your Mendeley library and check each new imported reference to ensure the information is correct. 

Adding references from LibrarySearch

Mendeley Web can use the same import methods for LibrarySearch as outlined in Mendeley Desktop.  The following instructions deal with importing citations using the Mendeley Web Importer.

  1. Open LibrarySearch and ensure your Mendeley library is open
  2. For full access, log into your library account using your RMIT ID and password
  3. Undertake a search
  4. Select the Mendeley Web Importer icon located on your browser's toolbar. A pop-up panel will appear with the webpage citation details
  5. Each search result (for the first page) will be able to added to your library. Select individual references or Select all
  6. Select the Add button on the Web Importer pop-up panel to select and add the webpage(s) to your Mendeley library, or a Collection

Import PDFs

There are two ways to add references to your Mendeley library from a PDF. Mendeley will automatically extract the metadata from the PDFs and create corresponding citations in your library.
