RMIT provides specific policies that will guide your placement in terms of forms to be completed, academic requirements, insurance payments and rights and responsibilities. Please discuss this with your supervisor.

Bullying and harassment

You do not have to be a employee of a company to be protected by anti-bullying laws.

The Fair Work Act 2009 (Cth) Section 789FC(1-2) protects employees and also volunteers and students gaining work experience.

Bullying behaviour may involve, for example, any of the following types of behaviour:

  • aggressive or intimidating conduct, belittling or humiliating comments, 
  • spreading malicious rumours, teasing, practical jokes or 'initiation ceremonies'
  • exclusion from work-related events, unreasonable work expectations, including too much or too little work, or work below or beyond a worker's skill level
  • displaying offensive material and pressure to behave in an inappropriate manner.

However, in order for it to be bullying the behaviour must be repeated and unreasonable and must create a risk to health and safety.

Contact your RMIT supervisor immediately, if you believe that you are being subjected to bullying during your work placement.
