Creative writing journals

Journals contain articles that report research findings or review research developments within a subject area. Articles from academic peer-reviewed journals go through a process of review by one or more experts in the subject area.

Australian literary studies
A fully refereed journal of Australian and international literary scholarship and criticism. (peer-reviewed)

An international peer reviewed journal published by the Australasian Association of Writing Program. Includes research articles on creative and professional writing and processes, the teaching of writing, and allied topics. (peer-reviewed)
Journal of modern literature
A leading scholarly journal in the field of modern and contemporary literature. It emphasises scholarly studies of literature in all languages, as well as related arts and cultural artifacts, from 1900 to the present. International in its scope. (peer-reviewed)
Antipodes
The official journal of the American Association of Australasian Literary Studies. The journal includes critical essays on Australian and New Zealand literature and culture, and comparative studies. (peer-reviewed)
New writing
The International Journal for the Practice and Theory of Creative Writing, this is a leading international journal in the field of Creative Writing Studies and publishes both critical and creative work. (peer-reviewed)
Journal of postcolonial writing
An academic journal devoted to the study of literary and cultural texts produced in various postcolonial locations around the world. It explores postcolonial writing, related critical theories, and the economic, political and cultural forces that shape contemporary global developments. (peer-reviewed)
Australian women's book review
The review has been published online from Brisbane since 1999; it prints reviews, by women, mainly in Australia and the Pacific region. (peer-reviewed)
RoundTable
Original work by postgraduates and early career researchers in Creative Writing, Children's Literature and English Literature. (peer-reviewed)
World literature today
Features essays, original poetry and fiction, coverage of transnational issues and trends, author profiles and interviews, book reviews, travel writing, and coverage of the other arts, culture, and politics as they intersect with literature. (peer-reviewed)

Popular literary magazines

Meanjin
Known primarily as a literary magazine, Meanjin reflects the breadth of contemporary thinking, be it on literature, other art forms, or the broader issues of the times.
Griffith review
A quarterly publication featuring essays, reportage, memoir, fiction, poetry and artwork from established and emerging writers and artists. Each edition of the Review is developed around a contemporary theme.
Australian book review
Contains reviews, essays, commentaries, letters, interviews and creative writing going back to 1978, when the magazine was revived. It is a unique critical resource for scholars, teachers, students, and general readers.
Fourth genre
Devoted to publishing notable, innovative work in nonfiction. The title reflects the intention to give nonfiction its due as a literary genre to give writers of the fourth genre a showcase for their work and to give readers a place to find the liveliest and most creative works in the form.
Overland
Publishing features, fiction, poetry, reviews, comment, artwork and opinion pieces, Overland is committed to engaging with important literary, cultural and political issues in contemporary Australia. It has a tradition of publishing dissenting articles with a political and cultural focus.
Westerly
Covers literature and culture throughout the world, but maintains a special emphasis on Australia, particularly Western Australia, and the Asian region. (peer-reviewed)
Southerly
Southerly publishes a wide range of poetry and fiction, critical essays and commentaries from writers and scholars all over Australia and New Zealand.
Rabbit
A journal for nonfiction poetry.
Going down swinging
One of Australia’s longest-running literary journals. Publishing digital as well as print and audio anthologies since 1979.
Voiceworks
Voiceworks is a national quarterly magazine that features exciting new writing and art by young Australians.
Kill Your Darlings
A quarterly publication. It publishes commentary, essays, interviews, fiction and reviews.
The Lifted Brow
A bimonthly magazine from Australia. Publishes fiction, essays, art, comics, and commentary on areas ranging from maths to celebrity to design.
Poetry
Poetry is the oldest monthly devoted to verse in the English-speaking world. Poetry's mission: to print the best poetry written today, regardless of style, genre, or approach.
Paris review
A literary magazine featuring original writing, art, and in-depth interviews with prominent writers.
The London review of books
Provides a space for some of the world’s best writers to explore a wide variety of subjects in detail – from art and politics to science and technology via history and philosophy, not to mention fiction and poetry.
Harper's Magazine
One of the oldest literary and opinion journals in the United States. It was founded in 1850 as a literary journal.
Granta
A literary quarterly. Each themed issue of Granta turns the attention of the world’s best writers on to one aspect of the way we live.
The New York times book review
Current non-fiction and fiction book reviews. It is one of the most influential and widely read book review publications in the industry.
American poetry review
Dedicated to reaching a worldwide audience with a diverse array of the best contemporary poetry and literary prose. APR also aims to expand the audience interested in poetry and literature, and to provide authors, especially poets, with a far-reaching forum in which to present their work.

Australian research quarterly
An international forum for the publication of original peer-reviewed papers offering significant research and analyses on the full range of the publishing industry. (peer-reviewed)
The journal of electronic publishing
An open access journal that publishes research and discussion about contemporary publishing practices, and the impact of those practices upon users. (peer-reviewed)
Journal of scholarly publishing
Addressing the age-old problems in publishing as well as the new challenges resulting from changes in technology and funding. (peer-reviewed)
English literature in transition
Publishes articles on fiction, poetry, drama, or subjects of cultural interest in the 1880–1920 period of British literature. (peer-reviewed)
Books + publishing magazine
Publishes news and information about the bookselling and publishing industry, analysis of issues, events coverage, product features, international book trade news, profiles of industry figures and companies, bookselling news, book information, monthly bestsellers lists and more.
Publishing studies
Was the journal of the Graduate program in Publishing Studies at RMIT University. Articles cover all areas of the Australian book trade.
Booklist
Booklist is a publication of the American Library Association that provides critical reviews of books and audio-visual materials for all ages. Booklist's primary audience consists of libraries, educators, and booksellers.

Screenwriting journals

Journal of Screenwriting
Explores the nature of writing for the moving image in the broadest sense, highlighting current academic thinking around scriptwriting whilst also reflecting on this with a truly international perspective and outlook.
Adaptation: the journal of literature on screen studies
An international, peer-reviewed journal, offering academic articles, film and book reviews, including both book to screen adaptations and screen to book adaptations. (peer-reviewed)

Journal of film and video

Film international
