Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL)

Provides an introduction to educators interested in scholarly practice and research in the field of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL).

Where to share

Sharing your findings in educational research is a defining feature of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL). The choice of platform, format, and content for sharing your work can be guided by your teaching and learning interests, the educational challenges specific to your field, the strategic goals of your college or school, and your career goals as an educator.

Opting to publish brief, less formal pieces or to present at local seminars can serve as effective steps towards speaking at larger teaching and learning or subject-specific conferences and writing for peer-reviewed journals.

For advice on sharing your research, consider consulting with peers and your professional network.

Becoming familiar with the SoTL literature can further develop your awareness. Should you come across a good paper, use researcher profile tools to follow authors’ other publications.

Strategic publishing

Consider your publication options, you may need to do some research to find the most suitable journal or platform for your work.

Key factors to weigh include the theme of your research, the target readership, and the influence of prospective journals. Remember, publishing in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals can boost your academic profile, but it doesn’t guarantee that your desired audience will engage with your paper. It’s important to align your choice with both your research goals and the readers you wish to inform.

Open access publishing

The RMIT Library has Read and Publish agreements with many publishers in the SoTL discipline. You may be able to publish in open access journals covered by these agreements, without being subject to article processing charges (APCs).
