About the Pride writing and art competition

“Our future” - submit a written or audiovisual response that exemplifies your own vision, story, experience, hope or dream for the future of the LGBTQIA+ community - OUR FUTURE! 

Written responses could include a short story, personal essay, opinion piece, poem; audio visual responses could include a Tik Tok, photo, video, whatever your heart desires!


Competition overview

The competition is open to all current RMIT students.  The winners will be announced on "Wear It Purple Day" - August 30th.

There will be two categories that can be entered:

  • Written - A submission up to 1000 words. Short Essay / opinion piece / a poem.
  • Visual art - Can be anything:  Tik Tok / Poster / small physical item. Item should be no greater than 1 metre in height, width or depth, and no greater than 5kg in weight.  Digital art should be in JPEG format, no greater than 1GB in size.  Video recordings should be  in MP4 format, maximum 1GB in size and between 1 to 5 minutes in length. 
  • Accessibility - Submissions  should be accessible to and respectful of diverse audiences and contain a content warning if appropriate.

Dates and Prizes

Key dates

  • Submissions open July 15th, 2024
  • Submissions close August 18th, 2024
  • Showcase of submissions available from August 26-28 in building 8, level 6 in the library.
  • Winner announced on Wear-it-Purple Day - August 30.   Afternoon tea provided at event.

Submissions

  • Submissions of written works will be via the submission form with attached work.
  • Physical items can be submitted at library front desks at Swanston and Bundoora from Thursday the 18th of July up to closing dates.
  • Submissions must be student's original work, or use Ariifical Intelligence, but AI must be acknowledged, and prompts provided in a separate document.
  • When submitting work students will agree to conditions provided at that time.

  • Creativity and engagement
  • Originality
  • Art aesthetic value and composition
  • Writing originality and fresh points of view

Judges

  • Lia Dewey Morgan: A poet, editor and emerging librarian. She is one of the recipients of the 2024 Wheeler Center Hot Desk. Her first book, Bath Songs, was published by local smallpress nomorepoetry.
  • Dr. Peta Murray: Is best known as a playwright, she also writes short stories and essays and is a freelance dramaturg, director & occasional performer.   You can find her working away at the School of Media & Communication at RMIT University, or via the non/fictionLab.
  • Frank Candiloro:  Has 10 years of experience writing graphic novels, most are LGBTQIA+ themed.  Involvement in the National young writer's festival, the Digital Writers Festival as well as having written for Screen Education.

Prizes

  • $200 for best written work.
  • $200 for best visual artwork.
  • $50 for people's choice work chosen during showcase period.

Intellectual Property

Terms and conditions

  • Students who have registered interest will receive the terms and conditions of the competition in registration pack, and will need to agree to these terms.
  • Students will sign an IP consent form upon submission.
  • Students will submit their own original work only.
