DataLab is the analysis solution for high-end users who want to undertake real time complex analysis of detailed microdata. DataLab enables the secure analysis of highly detailed ABS microdata and requires registration and compliance training with the ABS. Researchers must be able to use statistical modeling software like R, SAS, Stata, and Python within DataLab to analyse the microdata. All outputs from DataLab undergo ABS clearance before release. The ABS DataLab meets 'Protected' level security standards according to the ABS System Security Plan. The secure environment for accessing DataLab includes measures such as data encryption, closed network virtual machines, and multi-factor authentication.
Using DataLab:
RMIT allows access to DataLab for research staff and HDRs. Researchers and HDRs will need to meet the ABS safe people criteria for DataLab access, which includes:
The ability to use at least one of the statistical analytical languages available in the DataLab (R, SAS, Stata and Python).
At least three years of either quantitative research experience or university study with a significant component working with quantitative data or have a referral from an experienced researcher working on the same project.
Located in Australia when accessing the microdata.
Belong to an Australian organisation (international researchers and organisations will be considered on a case by case basis)
Have completed ABS safe researcher training and refresher training as per ABS refresher policy
Have completed all relevant responsible use of ABS data undertakings and declarations
Belong to an organisation with a Responsible Officer Undertaking in place with the ABS
Have an approved safe project that is for statistical and/or research purposes and demonstrates public value
Meet additional criteria that apply to specific microdata.
1: DataLab Registration
The researcher (Staff or Higher Degree Research students only) registers in ABS Registration Centre to activate DataLab account and agrees to conditions of use for DataLab. https://registrationcentre.abs.gov.au/registration/register.jsp
2: Project proposal submission
Researcher contacts the ABS to discuss project requirements and data options before completing and submitting a project proposal to ABS.
3: Project Assessment by ABS
The researcher outlines their statistical experience, commits to protect the confidentiality of data and ensures that all members of the project team have approval from the ABS.
4: Undertake DataLab safe researcher training
The researcher will need to complete the DataLab safe researcher - training, which can be completed while ABS considers research proposal.
Several legal documents must be signed before accessing microdata in the DataLab and the following must be submitted after completing safe researcher training:
Individual Undertaking and DataLab Declaration of Compliance
DataLab quiz
additional documents relevant to particular datasets, if requested by ABS
if the researcher is not an experienced researcher, you may need to submit a DataLab Referral
Once DataLab access approval has been granted, the project proposal will be sent to the RMIT ABS DataLab Primary Contact Tristan Badham, Manager, Library Services Research.
