EndNote Online

Endnote Online is the online version of the EndNote Desktop software program. To learn about EndNote Desktop, please click on the 'EndNote: a beginner's guide' tab.

Managing and sharing groups

EndNote Online Groups allows you to organise your references, as per EndNote Desktop version.

To create a group:

  1. Click on Manage my Groups under the Organize tab
  2. Click on New Group
  3. At the Script prompt, enter a new group name in the dialogue box and click OK
  4. Your new group should appear in the My Groups column and in My Groups under the My References tab.

To add references to a group

  1. In My References select your references
  2. At the Add to group... drop-down menu, choose your group OR
  3. Open the individual reference and click on the arrow beside Groups, and select the desired group OR
  4. When entering a new reference click on the arrow beside Groups, and select the required group.

EndNote Online allows you to share your reference groups with other EndNote Online users. Any groups others have shared with you will appear under Other's Groups.

To share a group:

  1. Select Manage My Groups from the Organize tab.
  2. Mark the Share box for the group that you want to share
  3. Click the Manage Sharing button to add people to the shared group
  4. Click on Start sharing this group
  5. Enter the email address (the account name) of the person you want to share the group with
  6. Choose Ready Only or Read & Write access to your group
  7. Shared groups will appear  under My References with the shared icon displayed beside it.

Note:

Read Only: User's can use your references in Word documents, copy your reference to their own library, and view the data for your references, but not able to change them.

Read & Write: Allows users access to do all of the above, but they can also change your references. add references to the group, or delete reference from the groups. 

The level of access can be set individually for each person you share the group with and can be changed at any time.

File attachments

Attachments can be added to references in your EndNote Online library. These attachment files can range from either PDF, Word doc, images etc.  
1. Select My References tab, then all references will display

2. For each reference a paper clip image Capture.JPG will be evident, select the paper clip, then select Attach files

3. A maximum of 5 files can be added at one time to each reference. However, it is  important to note the available space for file attachments are 2.0 GB in total for all references.

Note: Any references with an attachment can be identified with a blue paper clip. 

Finding duplicates

The Find Duplicates option will allow you to search your library for duplicates and automatically mark the newer duplicate references. Any reference identified as duplicate will have a yellow background.

EndNote Online will consider a reference a duplicate if the following fields are the same:

  • Author
  • Title
  • Year
  • Reference Type
