Images in Canvas

Information on finding, registering and referencing images in Canvas, ensuring copyright compliance.

Where to reference images

Copyright includes moral rights. It is the moral right of creators of artistic works to be attributed for their work.

When using images in your Canvas course you should acknowledge their use by the following methods:

  1. All images should have a descriptive label that is prominently located by the image and be referenced in an appropriate style.

  2. Images registered with eReserve should include the Copyright notice provided by eReserve at the beginning of each module.

  3. A full Reference List should be available either:

a. in the last slide of PowerPoint presentations

b. if images are embedded in Canvas, include reference details at the end of each module.

For accessibility purposes, ALT text needs to be provided for all images. The text should be a helpful description of the image.

Referencing tools such as Easy Cite and Open Attribution Builder will aid in acknowledging the images.

Easy Cite provides examples of how to reference images in several referencing styles, and the Open Attribution Builder can be used for creative commons images.
