Summary
LibGuides is a hosted Web-based tool that allows you to create library guides.
Text and link formatting features are easy to use and require no special web development skills. It is also very easy to incorporate Web 2.0 features such as RSS feeds, Podcasts, and Animations into the guides through a simple menu system.
Any existing guide can be used as a template to create a new guide. It is also possible to link or copy Content Boxes (the areas of the page in which content appears), so they can be easily reused across multiple guides.
Other features:
Post to Libguides allows you to add a button to your web browser so that you can add webpage directly from your browser to a LibGuide
Widgit a small piece of code that let you create a small (Flash based) search box that can be embedded into a webpage, and most probably a Blackboard course.
Logging in:
[not included]
Support / Examples:
Help videos: There are good help videos on the Springshare website
HYPERLINK "http://demo.libguides.com/content.php?pid=237" http://demo.libguides.com/content.php?pid=237
Examples: There are also a set of examples on the LibGuides website, many of which have not been developed too much: HYPERLINK "http://demo.libguides.com/" http://demo.libguides.com/
Draft Guide
I have created a draft version of the nominated guide, which is mainly just a transfer of the existing content over to LibGuides, with a few examples of how some of the LibGuides functionality could be used (RSS / Embedded videos / images etc)
Change anything you like
Experiment with different approaches
Change the structure as you wish
Create introductory text messages for the content boxes
You may need to ensure that the comments are turned off for boxes where they are not appropriate.
Creating Guides
Creating:
Once you login to the My Admin section, you come to a menu that has Create New Guide as the first option.
Clicking on this link gives you a menu box where you can choose the ---- I want to start fresh ---- option (which will give you an entirely blank guide with just a Home page tab) or choose any guide that exists in the system to be a template.
Using a template creates an exact copy of the original guide, which you can then modify and change without any impact on the original guide.
Each new guide requires a description before it will be created (256 characters max). The descriptions from the current guides will fit into this character limit and can be cut-and pasted.
Editing:
To edit one of the guides you have created, you just choose the guide from the pull-down menu.
Pages:
Each guide is made up of a series of pages, and each page is represented by a tab. You can also create second level pages under a Tab (except for the Home tab). The overall structure of a LibGuide is more like a website then the flat page structure of the current Pathfinder guides.
To create a new page:
Click on the (add/edit) icon next to the top menu tabs
Choose the Add new page / tab option
Give it a (short) title which will appear in the tab or the pull-down menu
Indicate if you want it as a Top level page (tab across the top) or a page under a tab (in the pull-down menu).
If you put a URL in the box, the page will go to a external site.
Click Create this page
This is also where you go to:
Change the name of a particular page
To delete a page
To reorder how the top-level pages (tabs) are presented (there does not seem to be a way of re-ordering the second level pages they appear in alphabetical order only).
To copy a page from another guide
Profile Box.
On the far right column of every page is a box containing profile information about the author of the guide. This is initially generated from the default profile in the My Admin section, however you can edit what appears on each guide by clicking on the pencil icon. You can hide the profile box from view by clicking on the cross icon.
Content Boxes:
Each page is made up of Content Boxes that are used to add content to the page. The default page set up is to have a small box on the far right hand side, a larger box in the centre, then the profile information box on the far right side. However you can switch between three and two column layouts by clicking on Page Options link beside the page title then choosing Toggle Columns.
Option 1: Side box Main content box Profile
Option 2: Main content box.. Profile
To add a content box, click the Add new box link. This will open up the following menu box:
You must specify a name in the Box Title field this cannot be left blank.
Rich Text/Images/Scripts
This opens a text editor that lets you enter text, hyperlinks, and images. Text can be easily formatted (size/fonts/italicised/bolded/justified/bulleted/listed) much like a word document.
To insert an image (from the web)
click on the Insert Image icon
enter in the url of the image in the Image URL box (easiest way to find this is Right click / Properties)
set where you would like the image to appear in the box using the Alignment option.
for accessibility reasons, it is also recommended that a short description of the image is also included.
It is usually best to insert the image at the very start of the text box then choose where you want it inside the box by using the Alignment tool.
When using text and images, it seems to look better if you put about 10 in the horizontal space.
Images in side boxes should only be small as otherwise they break the box boundaries.
To insert a script:
Proquest have just started a new feature called the Proquest search wizard, which lets you embed a Proquest search box on a page other databases may soon follow.
To insert the Proquest box on a LibGuide page:
Go to http://widgets.proquest.com and follow the instructions for creating the search wizard
Copy the code that is generated
Choose the HTML option on the rich text editor, and paste in the code this will create the box:
Web links :
There are two types of Web links:
Simple Web Links are straight links without any text annotations underneath, although you can include descriptive text that appears as mouse-over text bubble.
Web links with more information have two description fields. The first called Description appears as an annotation under the link. The second called More information appears as a pop-up box when the user selects the small information icon next to the title.
The five stars next to the title are a rating system that users can assign a 1 to 5 star rating next to each database. There is no way to turn this feature off. The stars do make the Web links with more information option look strange for anything except a list of resources. It may be best for the liaison librarian to assign a rating to each database according to relative importance for the discipline.
To edit or delete a link click on the spanner icon.
To get click through statistics for each link, click on the graph icon
Use the links at the bottom of the content box to HYPERLINK "http://libguides.rmit.edu.au/aecontent.php?pid=3350&sid=17621" Add a new Info Link | HYPERLINK "http://libguides.rmit.edu.au/aecontent.php?pid=3350&sid=17621" Reorder Links
To add or change text, click on the pencil icon
User submitted links another option is to set it up so that users can submit a link to the guide (use the User Link Submission option).
Books
The books content box lets you create a list of books, with authors and call numbers, and have a link go through to the catalogue / e-book database (or Amazon or other source).
To create the links to the catalogue record:
Search for the title in the catalogue using the Title (omit first word) option
Paste the resulting URL into the Voyager Canned Search Generator to create a new URL without any session information. This can be included in LibGuides.
Voyager Canned Search Generator:
HYPERLINK "http://libraryasp.tamu.edu/cannedsearch/cannedsearch.asp" http://libraryasp.tamu.edu/cannedsearch/cannedsearch.asp
To link to subject headings:
From the base url:
HYPERLINK "http://cat.lib.rmit.edu.au/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?DB=local&SL=none&SC=Subject&SA" http://cat.lib.rmit.edu.au/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?DB=local&SL=none&SC=Subject&SA=
add in the subject words connected by a +
For example:
HYPERLINK "http://cat.lib.rmit.edu.au/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?DB=local&SL=none&SC=Subject&SA=Bicycles+Maintenance+and+repair" http://cat.lib.rmit.edu.au/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?DB=local&SL=none&SC=Subject&SA=Bicycles+Maintenance+and+repair
RSS feeds
To embed an RSS feed into a page, you need to first create the content box using the RSS feed option then click on Add RSS feed.
This will open a box where you enter the Feed URL and the number of items that you wish to have displayed on the page.
You get the feed URL from the host page, usually next to an icon. The best way to get the url is to copy it using the Right click / Copy shortcut function.
Podcasts
Basically same process as RSS feeds.
Enhanced video
This feature is set up to insert video clips mainly from file sharing systems like YouTube, although you can insert locally produced clips (i.e Captivate clips) if you use the following url code (change the bolded url and width/height sections):
Utility Boxes
Documents and Files - this box type enables you to upload documents to your Guide. The documents are listed alphabetically. Each document can have a short description which is shown when the user hovers over the title.
Dates and Events this box type is designed to be a chronological listing of events (such as for a class schedule) However the program lists dates in US order i.e MM-DD-YYYY and there is no way to change it to an Australian format so it is probably not worth using at this time. We will notify the developers to see if a Non-US date option can be introduced to the program.
Interactive Poll this box lets you set up a poll with a range of different answers. Users can vote (only once per computer) and you can see the results of all users.
Del.ici.ous
The Del.ici.ous cloud option lets you embed a tag cloud from your del.icio.us account:
Link or copy boxes
It is very easy to copy or link to content boxes from other LibGuides, your own or anybody elses, by selecting the Link to another box in the system or Copy another box in the system options, and then choosing the Guide and the particular Content Box you want from the drop-down menu.
If you link to a box - when the original box is updated or deleted so is the content box on your guide. You cannot change any aspects of the linked box (all formatting features are turned off).
If you copy a box you get an exact copy of the original and can modify and change the copy on your guide without affecting the original.
Deleting content boxes
When you click on the cross symbol on the top right hand side of each content box, you will delete that content box permanently. There is no way to recover deleted content boxes. It will prompt you to with a Deleting this box deletes all content within it. Are you sure you want to do this?
Post to LibGuides function
From the My Admin section of the website you can add a button to your web browser that lets you add web pages directly from your browser to a content box on one of your guides.
Once it is loaded, the button appears as one of your Favorites. From the web page that you wish to include you select Post to LibGuides option and then select the Guide and the Content Box you want the link to be posted.
(At the moment this tool would only be useful for open websites, as there does not seem to be a logical way of incorporating the ezyproxy authentication parts of a link to a subscription resource).
Widgets
A Widget is a small piece of code that can be embedded into any html based page.
The LibGuides Widget lets you create a small (Flash based) search box that can be embedded into a webpage, and most probably other course management sites such as a Blackboard course.
It allows you to choose which guides you want to present as part of the search box as well as customisable Title and Introductory text (max 255 characters). The authors profile details are also listed under the About tab.
EMBED PBrush
The embeddable code looks like this:
